What is the Best Drum for Acoustic Guitar?
The best drum for acoustic guitar will depend firstly on what you are most comfortable using as well as the type of music you and other band members are interested in producing. Acoustic drum sets had naturally been the first to appear on the scene and were used by the likes of Ringo Starr (the drummer of the Beatles, in case you’re unaware) and Elvis Presley’s own drummer, D.J. Fontana. But with the continuous advancement of technology, drum sets soon transformed into electrically powered instruments capable of producing a wider range of sounds at greater volume.
Acoustic Drums
If you’d like to create some old school beats then an acoustic drum set is more suitable for your needs. An acoustic drum set is composed of a bass drum – also known as a kick drum and the largest of them all – a snare drum, ride and crash cymbals, a hi-hat, and rack and floor toms. That, of course, is just the basics. It’s possible to combine several drum sets and have as many as dozens of cymbals and drums. It all depends on what your band needs, really.
Acoustic drummers use drum sticks to pound the drum heads or cymbals to directly produce sound.
Acoustic drum sets may also be categorized according to the genre of music they’ve been designed to produce. There are drum sets specifically designed for jazz, others for blues, while there are also drum sets that have been set up for country bands.
You can purchase acoustic drum sets for less than $400 but it’s possible to pay twenty times that amount – or even more – because of additional needs. Be aware also that basic drum sets rarely include cymbals so you’d have to purchase the latter separately.
Electronic or Electrically Powered Drum Sets
Unlike acoustic drums, electronic drums have to be connected to a sound system (also known as a PA system or amps) in order to produce sound. Sound bytes have been programmed into the set and each hit of the drum head would be processed to produce the corresponding sound.
It may sound very hi-tech, but electronic drum sets are actually more affordable than acoustic drum sets. High-end electronic drum sets, for instance, could be half the price of its acoustic counterparts.
Just remember that quality and the level of technology used for creating these sets are critical factors to consider. Inferior drum sets can only produce equally inferior sounds no matter how skilled a drummer you are.

Your sit would be very helpful to a beginner but what advice do you have for a more advanced crowd? What advice do you have for me to further my drumming career? I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you.
Hi Terry,
You’re correct….we have some articles on the editorial calendar for the more “advanced” crowd. We are working through it. Unfortunately, the pieces are a little down the road time wise given our resources.
