What are Electric Drums?
Electric drums may not have the same parts of an acoustic drum set, but they’re just as capable as producing the same sounds. And don’t worry – electric drums no longer look like they come straight out from your worst 1980’s nightmares. Electric drums today possess the most modern designs and utilize the highest level in musical technology. With this kind of drum set, you’d be the coolest drummer in town.
Brands Matter
Name matters a lot when it comes to musical instruments because the more established brands have a reputation of manufacturing instruments of excellent quality. In today’s market, there are only a few names that qualify as a premier brand for electric drums – names like Yamaha, Pintech, Hart Dynamics, and Roland. If you want to make a purchase that would stand you in good stead for the rest of your musical career then you should prioritize these brands over others.
This is not to say that other brands in the market are not worth your time or money. Some of them may have produced several excellent drum sets, but you have to research extensively just to know what these models are. Also, their performance hasn’t been tested the way drum sets from the four aforementioned brands are.
Cymbals
As with acoustic sets, cymbals are sold separately from a set of electric drums. Hopefully, you’ve found yourself a good set of electric drums by now, regardless of whether they carry the recommended brands above. Now, it’s time to shop for cymbals.
There is a wide selection of cymbals available in the market for electric drums. Basically, though, a hi-hat and crash & ride cymbals would more than do.
It’s only in the past few years that there have been electronic hi-hats which finally managed to reproduce the sound of acoustic cymbals accurately and again, these cymbals were manufactured by the best brands in the music business. For crash and ride cymbals, even the simple and low-end models were capable of reproducing the monotone sounds of their acoustic counterparts. It’s when you need to play a wider range of tone using crash & ride cymbals that the real test begins.
Drum or Sound Module
This is the brain of electric drum sets. Without a sound module, your drums won’t be capable of producing any sound at all. Here’s how they work: the drummer hits the drum head or surface with his sticks but produce no actual sound; rather, the strike of his sticks is processed by the module and converted into the equivalent sound.
