How to Choose a Bass Guitar
The first challenge for any novice guitarist is finding the most suitable musical instrument for their style and needs.
Body Shape
This isn’t just about the different shape of acoustic and electric bass guitars. In the case of electric bass guitars alone, you’ll have to consider between those with semi-hollow shapes and those with solid bodies. Each offers its pros and cons and works better for certain genres of music.
Guitar Neck
The same goes with guitar necks. For starters, guitar widths are proportionate to the number of strings your guitar has. Beyond that, there are also variations with its shape or form. Some necks have flat backs, others are oval or round. All these types have their own advantages and disadvantages as well.
Scale Length
This refers to the “vibrating length” of the string. A shorter scale length, for instance, is ideal for those with shorter reach as it will make your guitar easier to play. Scale length also affects the overall tonal quality of your guitar. A longer neck, for instance, may produce sounds of greater clarity.
Frets
Some guitars have only nineteen frets but others can have as many as twenty-four frets. This, however, is mostly a matter of preference. If you want to work with a wide range of frets to expand your musical repertoire then that’s your choice.
Woods
Finally, be very careful when choosing the type of wood that your bass guitar is made of. Weight is just one of the many factors you should consider. Some woods are obviously lighter than others, which would make your guitar easier to carry if you’re on the petite side or if you tend to play on your feet.
Different woods also produce different sounds. Swamp ash, for instance, is known for producing low mids and a rather punchy tone. Alder, on the other hand, tends to produce a crisper quality of music, which could work well with genres like classical music but maybe not so much with rock and roll or even country music.
There is really no right or wrong when it comes to wood variations. You just have to test them out and find which type produces the kind of sound you want from your guitar.
While the tips above can certainly help you choose the best bass guitar, they are not the only factors you should consider. You should also take into account the guitar that’s most suitable for your current skills and whether your budget can meet your preferences.
