How to Learn Guitar Notes on the Neck
Take a closer look at how the professionals play and you’ll probably feel both inspired and awed at how they’ve turned their guitars into extensions of their limbs. Their fingers run up and down its strings, from neck to bottom, creating music even with their eyes closed. Believe it or not, but you can do this, too. You just need constant practice, hard work, and patience.
Memorize your scales.
When learning how to play the guitar, whether you want to learn guitar notes on the neck or something else, your lessons will always boil down to scales so memorize them by heart. Practice one scale at a time. Learn their notes one by one. Try writing them down without having to play the notes then try playing the notes without having to check the scale you’ve written. If necessary, draw a diagram of your guitar to identify where each note of the scale goes.
When memorizing scales, you will memorize notes as well. You will know where to play A on the first string or D on the third string and so forth.
Memorize fretting patterns.
Which notes have no blank frets between them? If you can’t answer this immediately then you still have a long way to go.
Remember: notes E and F as well as B and C don’t have fret spaces between them. The rest do, which is why you skip a fret when you play D and E and so forth. Another thing to keep in mind is that the 12th or final fret is the same note of your open string. Lastly, the cycle just repeats itself, repeats itself…you get the drift, don’t you?
Regardless of what mode, scale, or key you’re playing you will eventually notice that there are only three major types of fretting patterns that your music can be categorized under.

The ‘x’ symbolizes the frets that you skip. Recall these three patterns when playing somewhat complex guitar notes on the neck. If it doesn’t sound right then you can simply move to the next pattern. As there are only three, you’re sure to get it correctly soon enough.
There are no tricks.
Learning how to play guitar notes on the neck never requires anyone to have genius-level skills or intelligence. Yes, it does seem intimidating, especially considering the number of frets you have to master, but give it enough time and practice constantly and they’ll soon be familiar to you as breathing.
