Tips on Learning How to Play the Guitar on Your Own

If you don’t have the time or money to spend on professional guitar lessons at the moment, here are a few tips to help you learn how to play the guitar on your own in the meantime.

Chord Positions

You can find a list of guitar chords as well as instructions on finger positioning from guitar lesson books and guitar playing tutorials online. But don’t be in a hurry to master them all. It’s okay to master one or two chords each day. There are a lot of days to come, anyway, so take your time.

Finger Exercises

These exercises are designed to make your fingers stronger as well as more flexible and nimble. Practice these exercises regularly to lower risk of incurring injuries. Remember: injured fingers or wrists could compromise the quality of your music so practice regularly!

Don’t Pressure Yourself

Don’t allow frustration to keep you from constant practice. No matter how difficult a piece or exercise may seem, you’re sure to master it in time with regular practice.

Receive Praise and Criticism Positively

When people praise your skills or music, don’t let get it to your head. Find out exactly what they liked and try to analyze why you were exceptionally good with it. Think of a way on how to apply the same principles to other aspects of your music when you play the guitar next time.

As for criticism, always take it as constructively as possible…even if it’s not positively worded.

Record Yourself

Don’t just record the sound of your playing but record your entire performance with a video player. That way, you’ll also be able to observe not just your music but evaluate your form and positioning as well. Watch yourself a few times to be able to pinpoint exactly what you’ve done wrong and how to best rectify it.

Care for Your Guitar

Guitar maintenance is part and parcel of learning how to play the guitar like a pro. A beautifully maintained guitar speaks well of its owner and is more liable to play beautiful music. Also, it will help you save more money by not having to change your strings repeatedly or buy a new guitar after just a short time.

Invest in Guitar Books, DVDs, or Software

Sure, there are lots of tips and tutorials on guitar playing that you can find online for free but if you want more comprehensive instruction then invest in professionally prepared textbooks and DVD. You can also purchase guitar teaching software for interactive lessons and exercises.
